Mormons in Pride: Salt Lake City
June 7 @ June 7 - June 8 @ June 8
Join with LGBT Mormons, families, and friends at Utah Pride 2014! Affirmation, Mormons Building Bridges, and Mormons for Equality will all be participating this year in Salt Lake City. Hundreds of Mormons participated in last year’s Pride. Let’s make this year even bigger!
Affirmation will have a booth at the festival at Washington Square (State Street and 400 S). Come visit us near the Sage Zone in the northeast corner of the Square on Saturday, June 7 from 3 p.m. until 11 p.m. and Sunday, June 8 from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. (see this festival map on the Pride website). We also need help setting up and staffing the booth. We’ll start setting up the booth at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, and we’ll start manning the booth fifteen minutes prior to the gates open on both Saturday and Sunday. Due to changes in the exhibitor rules this year, if you’re coming to help with the booth, you’ll still probably have to buy your own ticket to get into the festival. Also, please note that the weather will be HOT, so plan accordingly; if you have an Affirmation shirt, wear it! Anyone who’d like to help and/or has ideas, questions, suggestions, etc. for the booth, please e-mail Ellen at firstname.lastname@example.org. And whether you can help out or just want to drop by, check out the Facebook event page for our booth at Utah, and invite your friends and family to come visit us, too!
Mormons Building Bridges and Mormons for Equality will be marching in the parade on Sunday, June 8. The parade starts at 10 a.m. and consists of a six-block walk mostly down 200 S (see this map of the parade route at the Pride festival website).
Mormons for Equality (MFE) will be marching to stand up for full legal equality for the LGBT community, including civil marriage equality and non-discrimination measures. If you feel this message is one you can support, come walk with Mormons for Equality! MFE is #67 in the parade lineup and will meet by 9:30 a.m. at the Red Staging Area at 500 E 300 S, Salt Lake City, UT 84102. Dress in whatever you feel most comfortable (although Sunday best is encouraged), and signage should support MFE’s theme of support for legal equality. For more information, visit the MFE Facebook page for the march.
Mormons Building Bridges (MBB) will be marching this year with the theme of “Love is Spoken Here.” MBB seeks to provide a way for faithful Latter-day Saints to work within a church framework as they show love and support for LGBTQI/SSA people. If you feel this message is one you want to march for, come walk with Mormons Building Bridges! MBB will meet by 9:30 a.m. at the Blue Staging Area on 300 S, between 200 E and 300 E. Dress is Sunday best, and signage should support MBB’s theme (no political messages). For more information, visit the Pride page at MBB’s website or MBB’s Facebook page for the march.
There will also be an MBB-sponsored Mormon Hugging Booth at the festival, near the same location as the Affirmation booth (see the above paragraph on the Affirmation booth for more info on the location). Drop by to get hugged by a Mormon!
Mormons Building Bridges will also be participating in the Trans* Rally and March on Saturday, June 7 from 2:00 – 3:00 p.m. The Trans* Rally will be at City Creek Park at the corner of 2nd Avenue and State Street. The Trans* March starts after the rally and joins the Dyke and Interfaith marches as it winds its way toward Washington Square to kick off the festival (see this page of the Pride website for a map of the march routes). For more information, see MBB’s Facebook event page for the Trans* Rally and March.
Whichever group you come to support, THANK YOU for standing up! Please invite your friends and family. We’ll see you there!
