Jay Bell's GLBTI Studies CD-Rom AvailableThe Executive Committee of Affirmation announces the creation of the JAY BELL FUND FOR GAY MORMON STUDIES. The purpose of this fund is twofold: first, to support the scholarly research and writing necessary to combat ignorance, intolerance, and bigotry; and second, to preserve GLBT Mormon experience and history. Jay Bell has already made a major contribution in this field. His work must be carried on and others encouraged to undertake this work as well.
The GLBT community is woefully misunderstood, subject to intolerance and even hate. For those who are Mormon, this intolerance is magnified by statements and actions of LDS Church leaders who fear homosexuality, often out of ignorance. Overcoming these harmful attitudes can be done, in part, by telling our own history and relating our own stories.
We now have the power of the Internet to broadcast our message, but to be effective we must offer a compelling message about GLBT issues that can withstand challenge. We can also expect the support of other Mormon-related organizations, such as Family Fellowship, Sunstone, Dialogue, and the Mormon Alliance, if our message is factual and meets professional standards.
Scholarly research and writing involves considerable time and expense. Let us support this cause by creating a fund that can be used to provide awards and grants to those who are willing to undertake these efforts.
