LDS Rhetoric on Homosexuality     

The paragraph dealing with homosexuality in the pamphlet For the Strength of the Youth has been significantly toned down. The paragraph has been reduced to one third of its original length, and homosexuality, previously called “an abomination to the Lord,” is now called “a serious sin.” The new pamphlet was announced in General Conference last October.

The whole section on sexual purity has carefully re-worded, and the most condemning scriptural references (Romans 1:26-27, 31, and Galatians 5:16-17) have been deleted. Some observers find these changes positive, but for others, this is merely an act of correlating the official discourse with the rhetoric of Evergreen. Just like Evergreen, the new pamphlet refers to “same gender attraction” and advises those “struggling” to seek counsel from parents and bishops.

Old Wording:

Homosexual and lesbian activities are sinful and an abomination to the Lord (see Romans 1:26-27, 31). Unnatural affections including those toward persons of the same gender are counter to God's eternal plan for his children. You are responsible to make right choices. Whether directed toward those of the same or opposite gender, lustful feelings and desires may lead to more serious sins. All Latter-day Saints must learn to control and discipline themselves ("Sexual Purity," For the Strength of Youth, p. 15.)

Homosexual activity is a serious sin. If you find yourself struggling with same-gender attraction, seek counsel from your parents and bishop. They will help you. ("Sexual Purity," For the Strength of Youth: Fulfilling Our Duty to God, 2001, p. 28).
