LDS Rhetoric on Homosexuality     

A new story about the “bondage” of homosexuality has appeared in the August 2002 Ensign. The story, written by a “repentant” lesbian, claims that all her trouble began when she “started acting on the confused feelings I had experienced for many years.” The story doesn’t use once the words lesbian, gay, or homosexuality; as in all correlated LDS publications, it refers instead to “same-sex attraction.”

Sandra admits that her journey didn’t make her straight--she merely stopped having sex with other women. “I wish I could say that I never again struggled or felt same-sex attraction, but that would not be true,” reads the story. “What I have gained, however, is the strength not to act on those feelings, as well as the sense of peace I craved for so many years.”

Sandra’s story contrasts dramatically with the experience of so many gay and lesbian Mormons who have successfully reconciled their homosexuality and their spirituality. Unlike Sandra, who felt “humiliated, ashamed, and frightened,” thousands gay and lesbian Mormons have found peace and happiness in admitting who they are. An affirming attitude has drawn them closer to God and to the influence of the Holy Ghost.

Since the LDS Church withholds the full names of the authors of all the personal stories dealing with homosexuality, it is impossible to know if Sandra really exists. Some observers suspect that “ex-gay” testimonials sponsored by the LDS Church are authored and edited by the staff of LDS Family Services.
