Interest in Online Site Increases
Number of Visitors Compounds
August 1996
Since its beginning on April 6, 1996 (it was no coincidence that this is also the starting date for the LDS church 166 years prior), the number of visitors to this website has been on an upward curve. An article in the Salt Lake Tribune during the April church conference announced the address and the initial response was modest. Henry, one of the website designers explained, "during our first month we had 432 visitors, an average of 18 people each day, with 34 in one day marking the heaviest attendance." Each month since then has had a gradual increase of visitors. May had 460, June 596, and in July there were 702 online "hits."
"Our efforts to keep this a resource for current news and announcements of events is almost entirely dependent on input from our Affirmation family. The more we involve ourselves in the process of sharing our experiences and providing news and announcements of upcoming local events of interest to the LDS gay/lesbian community, the better this online site will be," Henry added. Of the guestbook responses, 91% have been supportive, 9% non-supportive (interestingly, non-supportive responses have all been from persons under 20 years old). 21% of the guests are female / 79% male. 9% are under 20 years old, 55% 20 to 40 and 36% over 40.
The website has received a total of 2795 visitors as of August 19, with a current average of 34 persons logging on per day. Since the LDS church has seized the initiative in stepping-up the assault on the civil rights of gays and lesbians, places for dialogue and resources like this online site will become even more valuable. At the bottom of most pages are opportunities to provide input. Why not take a few moments today to share your thoughts and talents?
