Gay Mormons Applaud Hawaii Same-Sex Marriage Decision
Letter to the Editor Sent to Newspapers
December, 1996
Dear Editor:
As Executive Director-elect of Affirmation: Gay & Lesbian Mormons, I am writing to express our organization's appreciation and support for the Hawaiian court's recent decision in favor of same-sex marriage. Public recognition and legal support of such relationships can only stabilize and enrich the many gay and lesbian couples who till now have been unfairly denied the numerous legal and societal benefits of marriage.
The Mormon church has become well-known for the perception of strong support for marriage and the family. Unfortunately, however, that support turns to hostility and condemnation when the family is based on love between people of the same gender. Mormons should know better. At one time we were persecuted and driven from state to state because others considered our beliefs about marriage and family to be repugnant. Ironically, the church today now underwrites and leads a well-financed campaign to attack same-gender marriage in Hawaii. This opposition is nothing more than persecution, ignorance and bigotry clothed in the language of religion. When will the church face up to its own prejudices against gays and lesbians? All families, including Mormon families, have gay and lesbian members. Attacking us only weakens and hurts those families.
Affirmation recognizes that overcoming prejudice is difficult. It takes courage to support the Hawaii marriage decision. Affirmation: Gay & Lesbian Mormons stands ready to help families find the courage to begin this process of healing and acceptance.
