Anti-Gay Letter Distributed by Church
Missouri Stake Urges Saints to Support Political Cause
By Rick Fernandez, Affirmation Public Relations Director
July, 1999
The Mormon church has recently been very public in its efforts to influence anti-gay legislation in Hawaii, Alaska, and now California. However, such efforts are by no means limited to these states, even if they are less visible. Last April in Missouri, church members were instructed over the pulpit to contact their legislators and urge them to pass Senate Bill 266 and House Bill 821, two measures that would have declared any same-sex marriage void.
A scanned copy of a letter for the Columbia Missouri Stake issued in conjunction with this directive was provided to us by a church member in the area. This provides further disturbing evidence that the church has no hesitation to take advantage of tax exempt resources to promote its anti-gay agenda in the legislative arena. One can only wonder what drives the church to spend so much time, energy, and money when the subject is gays, while failing to show any comparable interest in a host of other issues that truly are threats to the family.
The good news we can report from Missouri is that despite church endorsement of these anti-gay bills, both of them ultimately failed. We hope this is a sign that Missouri, which once drove the Mormons out for their marriage beliefs, has learned a lesson in tolerance that ironically the Mormon church has now forgotten.
