Hate Crimes Legislation in Utah

January 2002

Utah has a new hate crimes bill that modifies the Criminal Code to include "sexual preference." Senate Bill 64, has been introduced by Senator Alicia Suazo and is currently with the rules committee awaiting assignment to a standing committee. You can view the bill by going to:

If you live in Utah, your help is needed at this time to lobby the members of the rules committee to ensure that Senate Bill 64 will be assigned to a standing committee, the next step in its advancement through the legislative process. You can do this by contacting members of the rules committee to express your support of the bill by either calling 538-1035 and leaving brief voice mail messages for Senator Michael Waddoups, Senator Dave Gladwell, Senator Chris Buttars, Senator Parley Hellewell, Senator Terry Spencer, Senator Pete Knudson, Senator Ed Mayne, and Senator Gene Davis. It is also quite easy to email them individually by visiting:

Your continued involvement with this effort is greatly appreciated!
