'Out' Magazine Features Gay Mormon Movie
By Hugo Salinas
December 2003
An article in the January 2004 issue of Out magazine features some of the people who participated in the making of the new gay Mormon-themed movie Latter Days. Film director C. Jay Cox and article author Darren Frei are both gay former Mormons.
Cox, who served a mission in the Philippines and earned a degree from BYU, says he got the idea to make the movie after coming across some old missionary photos. "I thought, Wow, the person I was, this Mormon missionary, and the person that I am, this gay man living in Hollywood, are such opposites. What if I put them in a room and poke them with sticks and make them talk to each other?"
Unlike Cox, Frei dropped out of BYU before he could be thrown out. "My parents, pious yet completely loving Mormons,… don't mind if my partner and I share the same bed in the house--as long as we don't drink coffee in the morning," says Frei.
"Yeah," reflects Cox, "but they're still putting 10% of their income into an organization that is then putting millions of dollars into outlawing your ability to get married. I find that dichotomy a little tough."
A review of Latter Days appeared in the August 2003 issue of Affinity.
