“Doonesbury” Lampoons Romney's Gay Flip-Flop
Adapted from a story in The Salt Lake Tribune
April 2007
Romney has been the subject of the syndicated strip “Doonesbury” all week, with the fictional radio show anchor Mark Slackmeyer appearing stunned when Romney isn't the same person who previously ran — as the comic portrays him — as a pro-choice, gay-rights-supporting, NRA-opposing moderate.
“I want to tell you how much I admire you for the pro-gay positions
you took as governor of Massachusetts,” says Slackmeyer in one
of the strips. “I salute you for it, sir! You're a good friend
to gays! You have true political courage!”
“No, no, I don't! Really, none!” replies Romney, who ran for governor on a pro-gay, progressive agenda, and then flip-flopped on almost every important social issue.
“I can't believe what I'm hearing here, Governor,” the cartoon character says, portraying a radio host interviewing Romney. “Abandoned positions on abortion and gun rights and gay rights and stem cell research and immigration and tax cuts and your own health care plan? Is there anything that hasn't changed?”
“Yes, my deep conviction that I should be president,” the cartoon quotes Romney as saying.
