LDS President Thomas Monson |
QSaltLake Names President Monson “Person of the Year”
“This community is a better organized and more energized community because of Thomas Monson”
from a story posted at www.kcpw.org
December 2008
Gay and lesbian newspaper QSaltLake has named Thomas Monson, President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, as its “Person of the Year.” Editor and Publisher Michael Aaron says it isn't meant to be tongue-in-cheek; he believes Monson's efforts in California's Proposition 8 fight indirectly helped the gay and lesbian community.
“President Monson, because he organized the church so much against the gay and lesbian community in this effort, the ramifications of that are what end up being a very good thing, so it is, it's a mixed idea here where something very negative has ultimately turned around and become very positive,” Aaron said.
Aaron says the gay community has been invigorated by the defeat of Proposition 8 and new activists and organizations have come forward. This has been a result of their opposition to Monson's letter to Church members asking them to campaign for the controversial ballot measure, which ultimately passed.
“We are not doing this to spite the church, or to spite Thomas Monson. The fact of the matter is, is that this community is a better organized and more energized community because of Thomas Monson. Really when it comes down to it, the largest impact on gay and lesbian Utahns was by the actions of Thomas Monson in his letter,” Aaron said.
Aaron believes it's only a matter of time before gay marriage is legalized in California and other states throughout the nation.
LDS Church spokesman Scott Trotter declined to comment on Monson's latest recognition.
