Affirmation Love Stories

Love the Second Time Around

Trey Lathe and Guy Berryessa

We met three years ago (Aug '96) in Utah... or re-met. We had known each other at BYU. We both were members of Response (a Peace and Human Rights Advocacy group) and worked together for two years. We were both terribly closeted and did not know the other was Gay...we graduated and lost contact. Fast forward 10+ years later. Trey was giving a talk at a conference where Guy was in the audience. We met and ended up spending a lot of time together that weekend going to plays, talking, visiting friends and the like. We felt quite connected. I went back home to New York. Though I felt like we connected, the distance (Utah....NY) seemed quite daunting. Yet, we started emailing back and forth and then began to spend the nights talking on the phone (till sunrise occasionally). Before we knew it, we had decided we wanted to spend our lives together. When Trey graduated from his Ph.D. program, he moved in with Guy to Utah and then four months later we moved to our new home in San Francisco (where we both had wanted to live for years). That winter (Dec'97) we celebrated our commitment with family and friends (one of the defining moments of both of our lives).

We now live in Heidelberg, Germany where I work as a biologist for a European research institution and Guy teaches English and takes care of his U.S. business long distance :). Our relationship is one of the greatest things that happened in both our lives. We both have gained much joy and growth from our love and commitment to each other.

Previous or First Love

David A. Hedlund

I was almost 15, when I was hitch hiking home, a young man, stopped and picked me up. We starred at each other for about 5 minutes. Two questions were asked ... Are you gay and Are you looking for a relationship? Our answers were, yes. Love at first sight, he was 23. We were happily together for 10 years 1 month and 15 days. When one evening coming from the parental home, a drunk driver, ran a red light, hit our car broadside, and killed two people. I went through the windshield, broke my back, unconscious for six days, in traction for another six months, and suffered a breakdown. I had to learn to walk again and still walk with a slight limp. This all took place before I became a Member of the Church. Still single, and I am letting God chose who will be my next lover.

The Lovely Night

This is a story of true happiness. It all happened one Saturday when I was at the mall getting my hair done. There was a most finest guy named Sam (I changed the name). He was cutting my hair while I was eating chocolate with cherries in them. He asked for one and I gave it to him. After that we started talking and I found out he was gay. It was perfect (I was gay too!), and he asked me to go get some ice cream at the new shop at the corner on Maine St. I said "yes" and my heart was beating like a rabbit being cased by a wolf. (I wished he would chase me around!) Well to make a long story short, we got married a year later and we have also adopted a baby girl (1 month old). We have been married for 4 years! The end.

Our Friends Thought It Might Work...

Kirt and Roger

I met the love of my life one evening while going out to dinner with friends in SLC. (April 1996) I didn't know it at the time, but they were bringing this guy with them from Casper, WY. He happened to be in town visiting for a vacation. We met, and it was truly love at first sight. We couldn't get enough information about each other. After dinner... there was dancing at a couple of different clubs in SLC. Then, we did the early morning breakfast thing. By this time, we didn't want to let go of each other. We sat next to each other at breakfast. I eat left handed... him with the right. We held hands under the table while we ate. I couldn't take my eyes off of him. Anyway, the time came for us to part company. He went to Ogden with our friends, and I returned home to Provo where I lived at the time. A kiss good night would have to last me until that first visit to Wyoming! Of course, as soon as I got home, I wrote an extensive e-mail to him and could hardly wait for a return answer. He drove home with a big smile... maybe knowing that he might have found "the one." We communicated via e-mail for several months and of course did the 400 mile trip on the weekends between Casper, WY and Provo, UT. We finally decided to tie the knot and bought matching rings. Roger moved to Provo to start our lives together. We currently live in Anchorage, Alaska and love it! We have made our home together, and plan on being together until the end of time. I love him with all my heart!! I am proud to call him my partner, mate, and hubby!

Two Dads

Bryan and Scott

Bryan and I met and fell in love at a Los Angeles Affirmation party in 1991. Five years ago we moved to Austin Texas and now have an adopted 9-year-old son. We have been very happy together and we remember fondly the fun time that we had while attending Affirmation. I wish we had a chapter here. Thank you Affirmation for bringing us together!

The Best Thing Ever

Mark

We met at the bus. I saw him and he was so cute. His name was Marcus. I started to ask him why he was so quiet and started punching the back of his seat. He was telling me to stop before he kicked my ass and I was like Ok go ahead. When we got off the bus he told me he thought I was cool and that we should go hang out sometime. I invited him to my friends birthday party where the music was so loud. It was rock music if you were wondering and we both liked that kind of music. Anyway, we both got drunk and just started to dance together because we were having so much fun. After the party ended at about 2:00am we left. I dropped him off at his house and he told me he had the best time ever and then what he did shocked me. He kissed me for the longest time and of course I returned the favor and then we said good-bye. Now a days we sit together on the bus and talk crazy about all things and all the people who get on our nerves. We don't talk like fags or act like it. We both look straight and everyone in school knows we are gay and going out together. We are like the most popular gay couple in the school. Marcus is the best thing that ever happened to me and I think all of you gay people who want to be happy with another person should make the first move. It worked for me, but be careful because not everywhere do people accept gay people. Take precautions and try to live a life of happiness. Rock is how I keep myself happy and my boyfriend Marcus too. Oh yeah, Marcus is black mixed with Italian. I am Latin. Good luck!
