Affirmation Suicide Vigils
2001 Affirmation Vigil in Mexico
By Esteban Obregón
May, 2001
Here in Mexico City some twenty people from different religious traditions (Catholics, Orthodox, Methodists, Anglicans, and even an atheist) met last night at the ruins of a 19th century Anglican church to hold a memorial service, in solidarity with our American brothers and sisters. Only two Mormons were present--Manuel and me.
It was a very moving meeting. We prayed, we sang a few hymns, and we read the names from the list in the internet webpage; to the list we added the names of two additional people (a gay man and a lesbian woman) who were not LDS but also took their lives after being excluded from their churches. We lit candles in their memory and observed one minute of silence.
One of our objectives was to denounce the unchristian politics that so many church leaders have adopted with regards to homosexuality, rejecting or ignoring what science says about gay and lesbian issues.
Hopefully these meetings will help all those who call themselves priests, God's representatives, pastors, teachers, spiritual guides, popes, and bishops, so that they may return to the central message in the gospel--unrestricted, unconditional love.
No more deaths! No more silence! From the land of Anáhuac, your brother in Christ
Esteban
