A conservative state representative is pushing a proposal that would block Utahns from changing the sex listed on their birth certificates and leave only two designations — male or female. He believes the bill is “based on the scientific and medical fact that an individual’s sex is determined at conception by chromosomal make-up and is not subject to change or self-determination later in life.”

In an interview on the Mormon Land podcast, Laurie Lee Hall, Senior Vice President of Affirmation, warned that such legislation would “ultimately wind up, without hyperbole at all, erasing transgender people from existence.”

At the time of this post, the proposed legislation, Utah H.B. 153, was being considered by the House Rules Committee. Additional information and updates can be found on the Utah State Legislature website.
