{"id":12332,"date":"2017-12-06T13:24:50","date_gmt":"2017-12-06T21:24:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/affirmation.org\/?p=12332"},"modified":"2021-10-03T10:05:07","modified_gmt":"2021-10-03T16:05:07","slug":"tdoc-hero-worship","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/affirmation.org\/es\/tdoc-hero-adoracion\/","title":{"rendered":"Dos grados fuera del centro: adoraci\u00f3n al h\u00e9roe"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/affirmation.org\/blog\/two-degrees-off-center\/\">Two Degrees off Center<\/a>\u201d is a blog by Rich Keys about the personal struggles, issues, and topics that speak to the LDS\/LGBT experience. \u00a0Sometimes it will be serious, sometimes humorous, but will always approach things from a slightly different perspective.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-12331\" src=\"https:\/\/affirmation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Hero-Worship.jpg\" alt=\"Illustration of hands releasing butterflies.\" width=\"1200\" height=\"628\" srcset=\"https:\/\/affirmation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Hero-Worship.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/affirmation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Hero-Worship-300x157.jpg 300w, https:\/\/affirmation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Hero-Worship-768x402.jpg 768w, https:\/\/affirmation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Hero-Worship-1024x536.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>By Rich Keys<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>September 22, 1975\u2014an ordinary day in the life of an ordinary man, Oliver Sipple.\u00a0 Even his name sounds ordinary.\u00a0 But after this day, his life would never be ordinary again.<\/p>\n<p>Oliver was one of about 3,000 people greeting US President Gerald Ford on his visit to San Francisco when Sara Jane Moore, a radical political activist, aimed a gun at the president and fired.\u00a0 She missed.\u00a0 Sipple, an ex-Marine, happened to be standing next to her and deflected her arm as she fired again.\u00a0 Ford was safe, Moore was captured, and Sipple became an instant hero.\u00a0 Suddenly the media descended and dissected every part of his life:\u00a0 A Clark Kent, minding his own business in the middle of a crowd, who suddenly can stop bullets and leap tall buildings in a single bound.\u00a0 Sipple\u2019s friend, Harvey Milk, an LGBT hero in his own right, mentioned to the famous San Francisco Chronicle columnist Herb Caen that Sipple was gay\u2014and why not?\u00a0 Here was an opportunity to break down stereotypes and let the world know that gays can be heroes too.\u00a0 But this was the 70\u2019s when Queer was still a dirty word.\u00a0 Sipple was still in the closet from his family, his employer, and all but his closest friends.\u00a0 First, he tried to remain anonymous.\u00a0 Then he asked the media to keep his sexual orientation private.\u00a0 But the press smelled a great story and went full speed ahead.\u00a0 Instead of his family honoring the hero, they totally disowned him.\u00a0 In the Gerald Ford library, there\u2019s a letter written by Sipple to the president begging him to call his family and help mend things.\u00a0 The call was never made.\u00a0 He died in 1989, alone, with an empty bottle of Jack Daniel\u2019s next to him.\u00a0 Ten days passed before anyone found his body.\u00a0 He was 47.\u00a0 Only 30 people attended the hero\u2019s funeral.[1]<\/p>\n<p>In the LGBT community, there are millions of Oliver Sipples, ordinary people leading ordinary lives but hiding in the dark, afraid to come out into the light.\u00a0 Some are LDS.\u00a0 Some are in Affirmation.\u00a0 Some fear their own family\u00a0or losing their home or job.\u00a0 Others live where being LGBT can get you imprisoned or killed.\u00a0 Each of us is on our own individual journey, and we need to respect everyone\u2019s timetable.\u00a0 Elder Neal A. Maxwell said, \u201cFaith in God includes faith in God\u2019s timing.\u201d\u00a0 The same is true with heroes in the closet.
