Affirmation does not require as a condition for membership adherence to some particular notion of the right way to be LGBTQ/SSA and Mormon. Rather, Affirmation’s purpose is to provide resources and community to empower individuals to figure those things out for themselves.
Historically the LGBT Mormon community has tended to bifurcate on either side of a fault line of orthodox faith versus sexual identity and/or gender identity. LGBT Mormon organizations have generally preferred to prescribe specific solutions, either by offering to help individuals “overcome” same-sex attraction, or ease the transition out of Mormonism. Affirmation is trying to preserve a balance that empowers individuals and encourages them to self-determine within a context of loving community.
Those who have experienced marginalization in unique ways as minorities within both the LDS Church and the LGBT movement—Trangender People, Bisexuals, People of Color, and Women—will be meeting together. Part of the vision of Affirmation is to better serve, foster leadership, and make visible the issues specific to these underrepresented groups.
We must live without fear or envy of others’ stories. Live with confidence. Know your truth. Always have confidence in the abundance of our Heavenly Father’s love for all of us.
On October 9 Affirmation sponsored a conference call to discuss the recent LDS General Conference, which included statements by Elder Oaks and Elder Nelson, condemning same-sex marriage. What follows is a transcript of the discussion.
