LGBT Pride
This year everything turned odd, quirky, strange or bizarre, even tragic—anything but normal, and by June, most of us were ready to give up on the year, flip the calendar, and move on to 2021. Gay Pride was no exception. Throughout the world, all things Pride were shut down, canceled, or reduced to a virtual reality online, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Here at the start of Pride Month, we are reminded that horrific injustice still exists today and that such injustice is rooted in racism. We invite the Affirmation community to celebrate Pride this month by joining us in committing to equality, justice, and liberation.
In the documentary, Carson shares his and his Mormon family’s journey, culminating with him, his mother, and other members of his family marching with Affirmation in the 2018 Salt Lake City Pride parade.
A lesbian couple who stopped by were delighted to learn that Affirmation had a place for them even though they had left the Church long ago, while it also had a place for their devout, believing family and friends. Another lesbian woman I spoke to shared her faith and her testimony with me, as she also shared the intense conflict she experienced, and was grateful to learn about Affirmation’s Prepare group, for church-active LGBT Mormons.
In 2012, history was made as unprecedented numbers of active Mormons marched in LGBT Pride parades in the United States and Latin America.
