Transgender Day of Visibility
Affirmation joins the international community in celebrating Transgender Day of Visibility. Since 2009, this has been a day to recognize, celebrate, and amplify transgender individuals within the LGBTQ+ community. It is also a day where we rededicate ourselves to growing in our awareness and understanding of issues impacting the transgender community and advocating for equality and protection under the law.
Visibility is critical in the fight for progress. Just as Harvey Milk called upon gay and lesbian individuals to overcome prejudice by coming out, allies of the transgender community must support them as they also combat prejudice with visibility. We must do what we can to educate ourselves and those around us.
Today is the International Transgender Day of Visibility. For several years now, I have found a great amount of purpose in figuratively sailing into open waters, trying to help the world understand what it means to be transgender.
We, as cisgender people, have to make the effort to understand. We have to see transgender individuals for the beautiful people they are and recognize their contributions to society and our own lives.
