Em memória amorosa de Ismael Duarte Valerio (10 de abril de 1967 – 8 de maio de 2025)

It is with profound sorrow and deep respect that we announce the passing of our beloved friend, mentor, and colleague, Ismael Duarte Valerio, who departed this life in the early hours of May 8, 2025, at 12:30 AM Mountain Time in Tijuana, Mexico, following a courageous battle with pneumonia and a subsequent heart attack.

Ismael was a pillar of strength, compassion, and visionary leadership within Afirmação: Mórmons, famílias e amigos LGBTQ, particularly in México e América latina. For over 16 years, Ismael devoted himself wholeheartedly to the mission of Affirmation, leaving a lasting legacy of empowerment, advocacy, and hope for countless LGBTQ+ individuals and their families.

As a founding force behind the formalization of Affirmation Mexico’s programming, Ismael’s tireless efforts helped build a structure that fostered unity, spiritual growth, and community resilience. His leadership was instrumental in establishing LATAM (the Latin American and Mexico Leadership Council and Training for Affirmation), creating space for regional voices and needs to be recognized and amplified.

Ismael also served with distinction on numerous International and European Conference Planning Committees, always bringing his wisdom, dedication, and unwavering belief in the transformative power of inclusive faith. His example inspired those around him to lead with humility, courage, and love.

Before his unexpected passing, Ismael served as a lead coordinator for the first-ever Latin American Conference of Affirmation, scheduled to occur later this month in Colombia. Despite facing personal illness, Ismael worked tirelessly in this role and served as a mentor to emerging leaders.

Beyond his remarkable contributions to Affirmation, Ismael was a beloved son, supported by two devoted parents who have been extraordinary allies to the LGBTQ+ community. Their love and support were evident in every step of Ismael’s journey, and we extend our heartfelt condolences to them, his family, and all who were privileged to know and love him.

Ismael’s legacy will live on in the lives he touched, the communities he helped build, and the enduring spirit of love and inclusion he so passionately championed. May his memory be a blessing, and may we honor him by continuing the work to which he dedicated his life.

On Monday, May 12th, we will gather virtually to remember and honor the legacy of our dear friend Ismael Duarte Valerio, who dedicated his life to supporting Affirmation LGBTQ+ Mormons Families and Friends with love and valor. This is a space to honor his memory, give thanks for his life, and come together as an Affirmation Family. Affirmation Mexico organizes the event under the direction of Alejandro Alcántara, Affirmation Mexico President. Details are below.
