We Are Affirmation

Affirmation is a non-profit organization working to connect, uplift, and empower lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer Mormons and their allies around the world from all along the spectrums of sexual orientation, gender identity, faith, and involvement with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Affirmation supports LGBTQ Mormons and their families, friends and Church leaders in seeking to live healthy and productive lives consistent with their faith or heritage.

We provide a loving, inclusive community for all LGBTQ/SSA people, and those who love them, regardless of how they identify in their sexual orientation, gender identity, or faith.

We encourage spirituality and empower LGBTQ/SSA Mormons to make valuable contributions within and outside of the Church.

We organize local gatherings and international conferences, provide informational resources, and work for dialogue within the Church

Affirmation's Mission Statement

Affirmation exists to work for the understanding, acceptance, and self-determination of individuals with diverse sexual orientations, gender identities and expressions as full, equal, and worthy persons within the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and society, and to help them realize and affirm self-worth. Affirmation's Vision

Affirmation will:

  • Foster intersectional awareness, inclusivity (regardless of location on the faith spectrum), healing, self-acceptance and spiritual self-reliance of LGBT Mormons, both in and out of the LDS Church;
  • Empower LGBT Mormons to claim their faith as Latter-day Saints;
  • Empower LGBT people of Mormon heritage to claim their own spiritual journey;
  • Be viewed as the “go-to” organization in and out of the LDS Church for information and resources related to ministry to and with the LGBT Mormon community;
  • Work toward providing face-to-face community for LGBT Mormons in every region and country of the world where the Church has a major presence; and
  • Foster deepened, robust, transparent, and positive engagement with LDS Church leadership that enables/enhances LGBT participation in the life of the Church, regardless of relationship status.

Affirmation's Shared Leadership & Organizational Values

As leaders, staff, and members of Affirmation, we will strive to:

  • Practice Christ-like love, respect, optimism, humility, patience, and non-judgment;
  • Be authentic, open, and have integrity;
  • Support diversity, objectivity, impartiality, non-discrimination, inclusivity, gender equity, and cultural competence;
  • Live by the Spirit to foster increased learning and understanding;
  • Model and be an example for others of a happy gay Mormon life;
  • Support all affected by the nexus of sexual orientation and gender identity and Mormonism, supporting each person according to their individual needs;
  • Avoid taking positions on church doctrine;
  • Avoid taking positions on how people choose to act on their sexuality or not;
  • Honor and support people regardless of how they choose to relate to the church
  • Provide a sounding board for those who are hurting;
  • Become a place of healing;
  • Honor each individual’s path and help them process through it;
  • Own our faith, following our own inspired agenda as we welcome conversation with the church;
  • Support church activity among the LGBT LDS crowd who is interested, creating a world where gender and sexual diversity and LDS faith coexist; and
  • Avoid duplicating anything being done by other groups but develop cooperative relationships to support others and bring us to unity.

Affirmation's Leadership & Staff

Affirmation is led by volunteer leaders from the international level down to our local chapters. The Affirmation Board of Directors leads the organization internationally. Board members nominated and elected by existing members of the board. Board members serve three-year terms.

The president of Affirmation is elected by dues-paying members of Affirmation and serves a two-year term. Upon election, the president of Affirmation nominates two individuals to serve as Affirmation's senior vice president and vice president. Upon their confirmation by the board of directors, the Affirmation president, senior vice president, and vice president form the Affirmation Executive Committee for the duration of the president's term and carry out the mission of Affirmation and duties as authorized by the board of directors.

The board of directors and executive committee are also responsible for the hiring and oversight of staff as the need may determine.
