It seems odd for us to apply the term “allies” to parents. In a normal world, every child simply assumes that their fiercest, most loving defenders are and will always be their parents. The term “parent” ought to be synonymous with “ally.” Unfortunately, we don’t necessarily live in a world where that can automatically be assumed. In the meantime, we are deeply grateful to parents who — sometimes quietly, sometimes boisterously — stand by our sides and let us know through action and through words that family matters, and that we are family.

As I have educated myself about the Transgender (Trans) community, things seemed to fall into place in my head and heart. For the last several years as I have been in more inclusive spaces, it has helped me feel more comfortable with who I am, with what I need to do to feel right in my body and with admitting to myself and all the people in my life that I am Transgender myself.

How was I the one frustrated with Cognitive Dissonance and not they? Here it was, right in front of me, that humble gathering of latter-day-saints I had grown up with and grown to love. This year’s conference will provide activities for LGBT Youth and teenage children of LGBT parents. It will also include sessions specifically for Church leaders and parents. We will also hold two free screenings of the “Families Are Forever” documentary on Friday, September 12 at 3-4:30 and 4:30-6:00 p.m. including a discussion and opportunity for sharing.
The great temptation in my life has been to prematurely resolve the great problems quickly and easily in one direction or another. But there have been profound moments in my life when I have been forced to acknowledge, like Moses, “Now, for this cause I know that man is nothing, which thing I never had supposed.”
My son said, “If anyone knew who I really was, they would hate me.” These were the same thoughts he had regarding us before he had come out to us. So Wendy and I took on the task of liberating him of that shame.
