Affirmation Pride: Why Will You March?

May 26, 2016

The last six months have been among the most difficult in recent memory for LGBTQ+ Mormons and their families and friends. We have seen many examples of heartbreak, alienation and misunderstanding. Yet, we have also seen examples of resilience, strength, and growth. We’ve seen division and the threat of division, but we’ve also seen people come together in remarkable ways.

For many of us, Pride will have special significance this year. It will be an opportunity for us to come together. It will be an opportunity affirm ourselves, our lives, and our families. It will be an opportunity to celebrate the hope and the strength that flows from knowing ourselves, from finding our truth, and pursuing that truth with courage. And it will be an opportunity to strengthen those who are still struggling to find that self-knowledge, truth and courage.

Whether we identify as same-sex attracted, lesbian, bi, gay, trans, queer or gender queer, our stories are and always have been the key to the path forward. That is why the theme we have chosen for Pride this year is an invitation to HEAR OUR STORIES.

Utah Pride will be the weekend of June 4-5.

We invite all within the LGBT Mormon and allied communities to bring all of who you are, come out and celebrate who you are, in all our splendid diversity — in race and ethnicity, in gender identity, in sexual orientation, in ability, in class, in our family configurations, in life experience, and in our approach to Mormon belief and heritage.

Wear bright rainbow colors, solid colors or multi-colors, tie-dyes, all things bright and colorful!

Bring a sign. Bring a picture. Bring a poster or a painting. Something that symbolizes a significant piece of your journey and/or who you are.

We invite allies to come join us and show solidarity! Bring something that symbolizes your celebration of the life of an LGBTQ+ loved one!

Come to the Affirmation booth after the parade and let us take your picture and record part of your story.

Put a pin in our “missionary board”!
