The Write Way: Literature and the Faith Journey – Affirmation Spiritual Gathering
by
Award-winning author, translator, and editor, Neil Aitken will discuss the ways in which writing and literature have been vital parts of his faith journey. In his talk, he will examine what it means to be a Mormon writer and explore the ways in which writing our own experiences can help us as we struggle both in and outside of faith, work through challenges and trials, and seek to communicate what is in our hearts and minds.
Neil Aitken is the award-winning author of two books of poetry, as well as an editor, translator, and creative writing coach. Of Chinese, Scottish, and English ancestry, Neil grew up in Canada, Saudi Arabia, and Taiwan, before moving to Utah to study computer science at BYU. He served a Mandarin-speaking mission in Taiwan, completed his undergraduate degree, then worked several years as a computer games programmer before eventually leaving that industry to pursue an MFA and Ph.D. in creative writing. A gray-romantic asexual Mormon, he presently lives in Vancouver, Washington, where he attends his local LDS ward and serves as both the Gospel Doctrine teacher and a YSA institute instructor.
