In Solidarity and Sorrow: Affirmation Mourns the Passing of Pope Francis

Affirmation: LGBTQ Mormons, Families & Friends joins our Catholic siblings and LGBTQ+ people of faith worldwide in mourning the passing of Pope Francis. We honor his legacy as a groundbreaking yet complex leader who brought greater compassion and inclusion to those often excluded from full participation in the Catholic Church.
Pope Francis’s tenure was characterized by a transformative approach to marginalized communities, including LGBTQ+ individuals. His heartfelt declaration, “Who am I to judge?” signaled a shift toward a more understanding Catholic Church. He took steps to include LGBTQ+ individuals in Catholic Church life, notably permitting blessings for same-sex couples under specific pastoral circumstances.
As our friends at DignityUSA expressed, Francis’s papacy was not without contradictions. Despite moments of progress, harmful teachings and policies remain. Still, his willingness to meet LGBTQ+ people with respect, to use their language, and to advocate against criminalization marked a profound and hopeful shift.
We grieve with those who found healing in his words and presence. We remain committed to a vision of spiritual homes that fully embrace the identities, families, and lives of LGBTQ+ individuals. May Pope Francis’s efforts inspire continued progress toward justice, belonging, and faith that welcomes all.
In remembrance and resolve,
The Executive Committee of Affirmation
