Freedom, Family, and Belonging

Conference Collage 16_9

June 17, 2026

As Pride Month continues, June invites us to reflect on themes that extend beyond celebration: freedom, family, safety, and belonging.

Communities thrive when people are free to be themselves, when families are strengthened through love and understanding, and when individuals know they have a place where they are welcomed and valued.

This month, several observances remind us of the importance of creating communities where every person can live with dignity, find meaningful connection, and experience hope.

Juneteenth: Freedom and the Ongoing Work of Liberation

On June 19, communities across the United States celebrate Juneteenth, commemorating the end of slavery in the United States and honoring the resilience, achievements, and contributions of Black Americans.

Juneteenth reminds us that freedom is not simply a historical milestone. It is an ongoing commitment to justice, dignity, and equal opportunity.

For many people, the journey toward freedom involves more than legal rights. It also includes the ability to live authentically, to be accepted within families and communities, and to participate fully in society without fear of discrimination or exclusion.

Within the LGBTQIA+ community, many individuals navigate multiple identities and experiences. Juneteenth offers an opportunity to recognize the importance of creating communities that are inclusive, equitable, and welcoming to all.

As we celebrate freedom, we also acknowledge the ongoing work of building communities where every person is seen, heard, and valued.

World Refugee Day: Seeking Safety and Home

Observed each year on June 20, World Refugee Day recognizes the courage and resilience of refugees and displaced people around the globe.

While displacement is often associated with geographic movement, many LGBTQIA+ individuals understand displacement in broader ways. Some have left countries where they could not safely live as themselves. Others have experienced rejection from families, faith communities, or social networks and have searched for places where they could belong.

The desire for safety, connection, and acceptance is universal.

At Affirmation, we believe communities can play an important role in helping individuals feel welcomed and supported during times of transition and uncertainty.

World Refugee Day reminds us that small acts of kindness, hospitality, and inclusion can have a lasting impact on someone’s life.

As we reflect on this observance, we invite our community to consider how we can continue creating spaces where people feel safe, respected, and valued.

Father’s Day: Honoring Diverse Families

Father’s Day can bring a wide range of emotions.

For some, it is a time to celebrate fathers, grandfathers, mentors, and caregivers who have offered love, guidance, and support.

For others, the day may be complicated by experiences of loss, distance, or relationships that remain a work in progress.

Within the Affirmation community, families take many forms. We celebrate LGBTQIA+ fathers, grandfathers, stepfathers, foster parents, adoptive parents, mentors, and other caregivers who contribute to the well-being of those around them.

We also recognize the many people who have stepped into nurturing and supportive roles regardless of formal titles.

This Father’s Day, we honor those who help create environments where others can grow, flourish, and feel loved.

Creating Safer Online Communities

Community today exists both in person and online.

Many people first encounter Affirmation through a Facebook group, social media page, online discussion, virtual event, or digital community. These spaces often become important places for connection, support, learning, and belonging.

As our community continues to grow, we remain committed to ensuring that our digital spaces reflect the same values that guide our in-person interactions.

This month, Affirmation is introducing an updated Comment Policy designed to help maintain welcoming, respectful, and supportive environments across our online communities.

The policy establishes clear expectations regarding respectful dialogue while addressing behaviors that can undermine community trust and safety, including harassment, personal attacks, hate speech, intimidation, and discriminatory conduct.

Our goal is not to limit meaningful discussion or thoughtful disagreement.

Rather, the policy is intended to help create environments where people can share experiences, ask questions, express concerns, and participate in conversations without fear of ridicule, hostility, or exclusion.

Healthy communities require both openness and accountability. By establishing shared expectations, we help ensure that our online spaces remain places where people can find support, connection, and understanding.

We invite all community members to review the updated Comment Policy and help us continue fostering communities rooted in safety, love, and hope.

Connecting Community Members to Resources

Creating welcoming communities involves more than setting expectations for respectful interaction. It also means making it easier for people to find the information, programs, and support they need.

Over the coming months, Affirmation will be expanding the use of a centralized resource hub throughout our online communities and digital platforms.

Whether someone is visiting one of our Facebook groups, following us on social media, participating in an online discussion, attending an event, or exploring our website for the first time, we want it to be easy to find helpful resources and opportunities for connection.

The resource hub will provide quick access to:

  • Local chapters and community groups
  • Belonging and affinity groups
  • Volunteer opportunities
  • Events and conferences
  • Community policies and guidelines
  • Social media channels and communication platforms
  • Donation opportunities
  • Resources for LGBTQIA+ individuals, families, friends, and allies

Many people discover Affirmation during important moments in their lives. Some are searching for answers. Others are looking for support, friendship, community, or hope.

Whatever brings you here, you can find all our resources, programs, and opportunities for connection in one place at: https://linktr.ee/affirmation

By making resources easier to find, we hope to reduce barriers and help people connect more quickly with the people, programs, and communities that can support them.

Just as our Comment Policy helps create safer conversations, our resource hub is designed to create clearer pathways to belonging.

Building Communities Where People Thrive

The observances recognized this month may seem different on the surface. Juneteenth, World Refugee Day, Father’s Day, community policies, and resource hubs each focus on different aspects of human experience.

Yet they share a common thread.

Each reminds us that people thrive when they are treated with dignity, welcomed into community, and given opportunities to belong.

At Affirmation, we continue striving to create spaces where LGBTQIA+ individuals, families, friends, and allies can find connection, support, understanding, and hope.

Whether someone joins a local chapter, participates in a belonging group, attends an event, engages in an online discussion, or simply visits our community for the first time, we want them to know they are welcome here.

Belonging does not happen by accident.

It is created through intentional acts of kindness, respect, service, and inclusion.

Together, we continue building communities of safety, love, and hope.
