A meeting to unite voices in a single feeling
On Wednesday, May 17, 2023, the International Day Against LGBTQI+phobia was commemorated, a terrible social scourge that affects the lives of millions of people in our community, today, in the 21st century. Affirmation Venezuela did not miss this important date, carrying out a significant activity; through a meeting that served to unite various voices in a single feeling, which expresses hope and concrete actions to eradicate this scourge from its roots. It is inconceivable to think that in several dozen countries, mainly for cultural and religious reasons, people in our community suffer LGBTQI+phobic attacks, which can range from harassment, insults, disrespect for our identities and human dignity, and even jail or death sentences, in the worst cases.
However, in Affirmation we believe that our united voices and the effort made with our faith and love will result in a strength given by our Heavenly Father to tear down walls, deconstruct hatred, and seek respect, tolerance and love through education, knowledge and communication, with action and values. A mission shared with our allied NGOs, among which CIUDIVER, ECOS, METAMORFOSIS attended, as well as important representatives of the organizations UNPFA and representatives of the municipal public power (Maracaibo City Council).
This discussion and multidisciplinary workshop, dictated by our advisors, Michelle Fuentes and lawyer Poelis Carrasquel, with the special participation of P.J. Romero and Political Scientist Elizabeth Martínez, served to dismantle myths about this phobia, while providing effective tools to overcome these attacks, also highlighting the dissemination of local legislation against discrimination, which undoubtedly is one more step towards the goal of achieving a truly just and egalitarian society.
