Affirmation does not require as a condition for membership adherence to some particular notion of the right way to be LGBTQ/SSA and Mormon. Rather, Affirmation’s purpose is to provide resources and community to empower individuals to figure those things out for themselves.

Historically the LGBT Mormon community has tended to bifurcate on either side of a fault line of orthodox faith versus sexual identity and/or gender identity. LGBT Mormon organizations have generally preferred to prescribe specific solutions, either by offering to help individuals “overcome” same-sex attraction, or ease the transition out of Mormonism. Affirmation is trying to preserve a balance that empowers individuals and encourages them to self-determine within a context of loving community.

Those who have experienced marginalization in unique ways as minorities within both the LDS Church and the LGBT movement—Trangender People, Bisexuals, People of Color, and Women—will be meeting together. Part of the vision of Affirmation is to better serve, foster leadership, and make visible the issues specific to these underrepresented groups.

Moving Beyond “It’s Not a Choice” as a Defense for LGBTQ+ Identities

“It’s not a choice” no longer has to be a defense of queerness and can instead be one of many ways of coming to and explaining a sexual and/or gender identity. This linguistic and conceptual shift is not only more inclusive and affirming of those who frame their queer identities in more agentic and experimental ways, but it also makes the question of whether a sexual or gender identity is “chosen” increasingly irrelevant.
