Affirmation receives nomination for the San Sebastian Awards 2023
The San Sebastian Awards are given by the San Sebastian community of Bogota Colombia, each year they recognize organizations that seek to give support to the LGBTQIA+ community, this year this community has nominated Affirmation as the best spiritual group for the LGBTQIA+ community; for us this nomination represents a great achievement as it not only gives visibility to our organization, it is also a sign that we are fulfilling the mission of Affirmation which is:
“To create global communities of safety, love and hope and to promote understanding, acceptance and self-determination for people of diverse sexual orientations, gender identities and gender expressions. We affirm the inherent self-worth of LGBTQIA+ people as whole, equal, and valuable persons and support them as they define their individual spirituality and their intersection with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.”
Affirmation has opened its doors to people of other religious denominations as people of other faiths who have been rejected from their churches for being LGBTQIA+ have also found in Affirmation a safe haven of love and hope where they can be authentic. This is an excerpt from the letter we received where our nomination was announced.
“Affirmation: LGBTQ Mormons, Families & Friends.
Respected Sirs:
Receive cordial greetings and best wishes for success in all your actions, aimed at the work of inclusion and defense of the rights of the LGBTI population.
The San Sebastian Colombia Community highlights every year the work and commitment of organizations and individuals who, through their efforts, have achieved great progress in the recognition of the rights of the LGTBI community; it also distinguishes those who, through their work, have achieved a more inclusive society. Within the framework of the XIV San Sebastian Awards, nominations were opened to the public, according to the criteria established for five categories.
As a great recognition of your tireless work for the LGBTI population, we are very pleased to inform you that you were nominated in the category: “Spirituality”, Person or institution that promotes the development and spiritual growth of the LGBTI population from the inclusion and guarantee of rights.
Exalting the work that people do for the defense of the rights of the LGBTI population is our duty as a community and we are convinced that together we weave a network of inclusion and support for all those who need it”.
Luis David Trujillo who is the national leader of Affirmation in Colombia and other members of the chapter will attend the award ceremony to be held on November 29th, they will attend on behalf of Melissa Malcolm King, president of Affirmation and the executive committee.
