Embracing Gender Diversity in Our Communities and Congregations, 2020 Affirmation International Conference

Embracing Gender Diversity in Our Communities and Congregations

October 14, 2020

This video is available in English only.

Session presented by Samantha Taylor at the 2020 Affirmation International Conference, a conference hosted annually by Affirmation: LGBTQ Mormons, Families & Friends for the entire LGBTQIA+ Latter-day Saint community. This year’s conference was held virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

For many, coming out as transgender leads to social — and far too often literal — suicide as we are rejected and even shunned by our communities. How can we learn to overcome our fears and biases to embrace some of the most vulnerable among us? How can we stop using our misconceptions cloaked as doctrine to justify intolerance and indifference?

Join Samantha as she shares a series of anecdotes from her journey and from others in the community. Learn how she reconciles her identity with her faith, and how it was the people, not the gospel who ultimately drove her away.

A Q&A session will follow the main presentation. Feel free to come prepared with questions for discussion. Samantha has heard it all and will address any respectful question.

The recording of this session and the entire 2020 Affirmation International Conference was made possible by those who financially supported the conference through registration fees. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, Affirmation relies on the support of donors to create communities of safety, love, and hope for the LGBTQIA+ Latter-day Saint Community.
