On October, 20th, members of Affirmation were invited to participate in this year’s election for president of Affirmation. The Affirmation Charter & Bylaws require the election of a president every two years and allow a president to run for a second term. While Nathan Kitchen, who has served as president since January 1st, 2019, was unopposed, an election was held with voting closing on November 3rd. An election committee lead by Todd Richardson, corresponding secretary, certified the results of the election to the executive committee and board of directors on November 10th.

When declaring his candidacy, Nathan named his proposals for senior vice president and vice president as Jairo Fernando González Díaz and Rebecca Solen respectively. Their appointments are expected to be ratified by the board of directors at a future meeting. Jairo, who lives in Colombia, currently serves as vice president and director of the Latin America Region. Rebecca, who lives in Washington, will be serving in Affirmation leadership for the first time.

In a statement published prior to the election, Nathan expressed his desire to support the return to in-person Affirmation activities when it is safe, writing, “a huge part of community and support is meeting in person as an LGBTQIA+ community and with our families and friends. These kinds of face to face connections change lives and heal hearts.” Nathan also stressed the need for Affirmation to continue to be a space where all can find support in defining their individual spirituality, the need to strengthen and support volunteer leaders, and the recognization that Affirmation’s membership ultimately sets the direction of the organization as seen in recent updates to mission and vision.

Laurie Lee Hall, who has served as senior vice president since 2019, is moving on to new projects outside the board and executive committee roles. “Her talents for building both organizations and people will be felt in Affirmation for years to come,” wrote Nathan.

Together, the president, senior vice president, and vice president form the executive committee of Affirmation. The executive committee serves as the functioning executive of the organization and leadership of the board of directors. It is responsible for the development and recommendation of policies and procedures for board approval and day-to-day decision making consistent with board-approved policies and procedures. The executive committee also recommends the appointment of a corresponding secretary, board secretary, and treasurer for board approval.

Nathan begins his second two-year term as president of Affirmation on January 1st, 2021.
