In response to the pandemic, Affirmation quickly focused on pivoting from in-person events to virtual events hosted by chapters, regions, and by the international organization, including the international conference. It was a learning curve for us all, as individual community members and as an organization. The outcome was really beautiful though. In many ways, expanding virtual events helped build community connections that would otherwise not have been possible. The 2020 and 2021 virtual international conferences were some of the most accessible ever hosted by Affirmation.

As Affirmation begins to return to in-person activities and conferences worldwide, it is important that the beautiful virtual connections created over the past two years are not lost.

That’s why we hosted Affirmation Connections on April 23, 2022. This was a one-day virtual summit with seven sessions throughout the day to inform, uplift, and empower LGBTQIA+ current and former Latter-day Saints and their families and friends around the world.

The day included an introduction to Affirmation called Affirmation 101, QPR Suicide Prevention Training, a session featuring Affirmation President Nathan Kitchen telling his story and answering questions, meetings of the Mixed Orientation Families of Affirmation and the People of Global Majority/BIPOC affinity groups, a live episode of the Called to Queer podcast, a story sharing hour where we learned about hidden survival strategies of sloths and shared our own, and a session featuring Past Affirmation President and nationally recognized speaker, presenter, and personal development coach Carson Tueller.

Thank you to all of our speakers, facilitators, and attendees who made this event successful.

All of the recorded sessions can be found on the 2022 Affirmation Connections page on the Affirmation website.

Affirmation Connections was open to all at no cost. We are grateful for many who donated while registering to support this event and the work of Affirmation. Those who donated at least $35 were offered a custom lapel pin featuring this year’s Connections logo. There is still time to donate to Affirmation and receive this limited-edition keepsake.
